The Nites – Whatever gets you through
You say to me,
that everything is ok now,
but it is not,
you try so hard to put on that brave smile that you ain't got.
I don’t care how, long it takes baby
I’ll be by your side
Whatever gets you through?
I’ll give you space
Whatever you got to do to find your way
Baby you can cry you
can fall you can break through it all
I’ll be there for you to do
Whatever gets you through?
Whatever gets you through?
I know it hurts
But I can’t pretend to make it be alright
Someday somehow
You gonna make it to the other side
Cause no matter what it takes I will
I’ll be what you need
Whatever gets you through
I’ll give you space
Whatever you got to do to find your way
Baby you can cry you
can fall you can break through it all
I’ll be there for you to do
Whatever gets you
I will listen, be your shadow
I will run to you,
I’ll never leave you behind
I’ll never leave you behind
I will hold you close, I’ll let you go
I’ll give you time, I’ll give you time
I’ll give you time
Nah na na nah na na
Baby you can cry you
can fall you can break through it all
I’ll be there for you to do
Whatever gets you through?
I’ll give you space
Whatever you got to do to find your way
Baby you can cry you
can fall you can break through it all
I’ll be there for you to do
Whatever gets you through?
Section 1: Target Audience (AGILE)
Age:
The age range of this song would be between the ages of 16 – 35 as this song is about relationships and commitment, even though teenagers reckon they know all about relationships and how they should be and how they should act but they can be very reckless and not very committed. Whereas adults are more experienced in relationships, would not be reckless and have a better understanding of how the relationship should be like and what they should not do.
Gender:
The song is aimed at both of the genders as it could be read in two different ways, the male audience may see it as inspiration and advice as to what they should do in a relationship for it to end well. Whereas a female may see it as an influential song as it shows them that they can have a good relationship and that there is always someone out there.
Interests:
The genre of this song is pop/rock which means that the audience of this song would prefer the genres of pop and rock best, another interest would be people who are interested in rock are more likely to get leather jackets, tattoos and listen loud music whereas pop is more likely to make you want to get up and dance. The music of the song is upbeat but it is also is very loud and empowering.
Location:
The location of the audience would be in London, United Kingdom as the band originate from there, so this allows the audience to feel a slight connection to the artist and it also helps them to get more known as people will automatically feel as though they can not only relate to the artist but the lyrics as well. The audience may also be in other areas of the United Kingdom as their audience will tell friends who will tell others eventually getting them known worldwide.
Ethnicity:
The ethnicity of the audience is white as they can relate to the band better than people of different ethnicities as they will feel a connection to them, however they may have other ethnicities who like their music as they may enjoy that certain genre so the ethnicity could be mixed, it could also be based by the area as the certain community may be mixed.
Section 2: lyrics
The lyrics of the song represent a love song you can see this when it says "I don't care how long it takes baby i'll be by your side", this suggests that the relationship is strong but the girl is going through some problems and the boy is telling her that no matter what happens he will stand by her through thick and thin. The song also starts of "You say to me, that everything is ok now, but it is not", this connotes that something bad has happened but they are acting as though nothing is happening, the lyrics then go on to say " you try so hard to put on that brave smile that you ain't got." This suggests that he knows that she is hiding things from him but she is not doing a very good job of it as she can not hide her emotions from him but she does not feel as though she can tell him about it.
The beginning of the chorus starts off with "Whatever gets you through, I'll give you space", this shows the audience that he will be there for her if she needs him but when she needs some time alone he will give her the space she needs to get through the troubles she is facing. The chorus the goes on to say "Baby you can cry, you can fall, you can break through it all", this shows the audience that she can use him as a shoulder to cry on, but he will always be there to catch her when she falls and that she has the strength to get through anything that tries to break her down. The chorus ends with "I’ll be there for you to do, Whatever gets you through?", the ending of the chorus shows that he will stand by her no matter what happens and that whatever she needs to do, she can with him by her side.
The song carries on with "I know it hurts, but I can't pretend to make it be alright", this implies that she has gotten out of a bad relationship and he is the best friend she has gone to for support and reassurance that she needs to get her back on her feet. It goes on by saying "Someday somehow, you gonna make it to the other side", this implies that she had gone down a bad route and it has ended with her being in a bad place so she needs to find her way back to them. The verse ends with "Cause no matter what it takes I will , I’ll be what you need", this shows us that he will help her find her way back and that he will do everything in his power to help her. These lyrics empower the audience to be better to their friends/ loved ones.
In the third verse it begins with "I will listen, be your shadow", this shows us that no matter the problem he will be there to listen to her and protect/ shelter her from the hurt she has felt in the past. The verse then goes on to say "I will run to you", this part of the lyrics shows us that if she ever needs him he will be there for her as soon as she needs him to be. The lyrics carry on with "I'll never leave you behind", this lyric shows us that as he moves on with his life he will take her along with him so she will never be alone and feel as though she is not wanted by anyone, this point is further proved when he says "I will hold you close", showing that she will always be apart of his life and that she is safe and protected in his arms.
Section 3: Music
The music contains a guitar and piano these instruments make the song seem more acoustic and realistic giving it an authentic feel to the song. The music is very simple creating a sad and emotional effect that makes you feel emotionally empowered but the music is also makes you feel stronger and that you can do anything with the help of friends.
Section 4: Tempo
The tempo of the song changes as the song as it goes along, for example at the beginning it is slow paced but it gradually picks up to a slightly faster pace, but when it goes to the next verse it slows back down again. This shows that when its a verse they want it to be slow so the audience can get a good feel of the song and it stays at this pace for most of the song so that you know that it is an emotional song and that it has meaning to it. Then for the chorus it picks up slightly to get the message across to the audience
Section 5: How would you visually communicate this song in a video (illustrate/amplify/contradict by?)
I would visually communicate this by having one person playing the piano and the other playing the guitar for the choruses but during the verses I would have clips of them helping a friend in need but also that friend in a bad relationship to illustrate the lyrics in the video to help the audience to get a better picture of the video in their head so they can imagine it better. I would also make sure that the images would change when the beat changes so the video has as many cuts as possible, to keep the pace of the song.
